## About the founder and the collection

The Reading Room was founded in June 2000 by Kirsty Sword Gusmão, Australian-Timorese activist and former First Lady of Timor-Leste. It opened soon after Timor-Leste's independence and houses the personal collection of Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão — independence leader, first President, and Prime Minister — alongside an open public library, a museum of Timor-Leste history, and community spaces.
