Handing Over Ceremony: Rehabilitation of the Xanana Gusmão Reading Room


On April 29, 2025, the official handover ceremony of the newly rehabilitated Xanana Gusmão Reading Room (XGRR) took place in Dili, Timor-Leste. This significant milestone was made possible through the generous support of the people of Japan, facilitated by the Embassy of Japan in Timor-Leste.

The rehabilitation project focused on enhancing key spaces, including the library, Uma-Mahon, museum (exhibition center), fence, and sidewalk, ensuring a more welcoming and functional environment for students, researchers, and the community. These improvements reflect a shared commitment to education, knowledge, and cultural preservation.

During the ceremony, His Excellency Ambassador Kimura Tetsuya reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to supporting education and cultural exchange in Timor-Leste. The contributions from the Government of Japan have further strengthened bilateral relations, reinforcing the importance of investing in learning and intellectual development for future generations.

The Xanana Gusmão Reading Room expresses its profound gratitude for this invaluable support, recognizing the essential role the facility plays in fostering knowledge, research, and cultural enrichment. With the renovations now completed, XGRR remains committed to serving as a vibrant hub for educational engagement.
